What takes you out of the bed? The smell of coffee. And what keeps you awake? The flavor of the coffee. Indeed, caffeine, the active ingredient of coffee, is a stimulant that gets you going throughout the day. Coffee has a distinct flavor, taste and aroma.

A well-balanced coffee flavor is a coffee in which no particular flavor is too strong. The mixture of aroma, acidity, body, bitterness, sweetness, and aftertaste is just fine in well-balanced coffees. In fact, most of the well-known coffee brands of the world are well-balanced coffees. On the other side, the second group includes coffees with a dominant flavor. Let us briefly discuss these coffee flavors.

Coffee with Fruity Flavours

Fruit flavors are naturally sweet tasting. In general, African coffees come with different fruit flavors whereas South American coffees have them as secondary flavors. For example, Kenya is known for berry flavors, Ethiopia is known for Lemon flavored coffees, Brazil is reputed for cherry, and Tanzania for Kiwi.

It is important to note that fruity flavors are not sustainable in espresso coffees as the flavors get destroyed in the espresso roasting point.

Coffee with Chocolatey Flavour

Chocolate is one of the most common and most loved flavors in the world. Indeed, some of the well-known coffee come in chocolatey flavors. Moreover, South American countries, particularly Brazil and Colombia, are leading the market of chocolate flavors.

Brazil is famous for milk chocolate flavor, Columbia for cacao, and Burundi for the dark chocolate flavor of the coffee. Subtle flavors, like milk chocolate, are found in medium roasts, whereas stronger flavors, like dark chocolate, are found in darker roasts. That’s why the dark chocolate flavor is common in espressos.

Coffee flavors such as vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, or chocolate are very common. Indeed, coffee companies add different flavors to make variants of coffee. You can also enjoy some unique flavors like pumpkin or English toffee.

According to some coffee experts, the top five coffee flavors are:

  1. French Vanilla (vanilla flavor with medium or light roast coffee)
  2. Caramel Macchiato (Caramel and steamed milk mixed with espresso)
  3. Pumpkin Spice
  4. Mocha (hot cocoa with a hint of coffee)
  5. Hazelnut

Coffee lovers prefer well-balanced coffees or espressos. However, lots of people enjoy coffee flavors. For example, Starbucks has a huge number of flavored coffee available.
